Pet Loss and Work
Share
Recently, I’ve been deeply touched by the number of workplaces sending gifts to staff and colleagues who have lost a beloved pet.
It made me wonder… what are the rules in Australia when it comes to pet loss?
After some research, I discovered that under Australian law, employees are entitled to compassionate leave when an immediate family or household member dies. Pets are not included in this definition.
So what does that mean?
If your pet dies, there is no legal entitlement to compassionate leave. You may use annual leave, personal leave if you are unfit for work, unpaid leave, or any employer-specific wellbeing leave if it is offered.
But here is the real question.
After the loss of a pet, especially if it was sudden or traumatic, how are people expected to return to work as though nothing has happened?
For many of us, pets are family. The grief is real. The shock is real. The empty house is real.
Perhaps it is time for workplace policies to reflect that.
In the meantime, seeing workplaces order gifts for their staff and colleagues is incredibly heartening. It reflects the true meaning of a work family, one built on compassion, understanding and care. In moments of loss, it is these small but meaningful gestures that remind people they are seen, supported and not alone.
